About Wayne Montessori
Nurturing Children to Love Learning
Wayne Montessori School was founded in 1979 to provide the first Montessori education to the children of Wayne County. Located in a lovely residential area of Goldsboro, WMS is a nonprofit private school offering individualized instruction, preschool through sixth grade that balances intellectual stimulation and emotional development.
Children of all ages show a remarkable interest in reading, math, geography, science and practical life as they work in a non-competitive, calm atmosphere with materials designed to stimulate their natural curiosity.
The founder of the Montessori Method, Dr.Maria Montessori (1870-1952) envisioned and helped to realize a new approach to education. This approach has been validated throughout the decades by the rapid increase of Montessori schools. Her innovative method of instruction with carefully designed manipulatives has proven to be exceptional in promoting early reading and math skills. It cultivates a life-long love of learning, independence, responsibility and respect for others.
How Did Montessori Start?
Montessori (pronounced MON-tuh-SORE-ee) education was founded in 1907 by Italian physician Maria Montessori. She based her educational methods on scientific observation of children's learning processes. Guided by her discovery that children teach themselves, Dr. Montessori designed a prepared environment in which children could freely choose from a number of developmentally appropriate activities. Now, nearly a century after Maria Montessori's first school in Rome, Montessori education is found all over the world, spanning ages from birth to adolescence.

Education is a natural process carried out by the child and is not acquired by listening to word but by experiences in
the environment.
